Product Description

Ancient Phoenicia, circa 6th to 4th century BCE. A wonderful mold-made terracotta votive figurine of the goddess Tanit. Tanit was sacred to the ancient Phoenicians, primarily regarded as a fertility deity but also was thought to bring rain in times of drought. She is depicted draped in a hooded robe standing upon a pedestal, originally holding an Ankh (representing “life”) in her left hand, which has worn away over the millennia. The figurine measures 7 1/2” high, with repair to the neck, otherwise intact with heavy earthen and mineral deposits. Ex Vigil collection, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
