Pre-Columbian Pipe with Bird // Mixtec, Mexico // c. 1100-1400 AD
Product Description
Pre-Columbian ancient Mexico. Mixtec, c. 1100-1400 AD. A fabulous ceramic fragment of a large smoking pipe, depicting a bird. Primarily consisting of a large and deep bowl, the front of the rim is decorated with the long-beaked, wide eyed head of a bird in flight, its extended wings visible just below. Wonderful, deeply-engraved details and designs, with traces of white cinnabar paint in the recesses, along with light earthen deposits. This was once used for smoking tobacco or hallucinogenic substances, chemical analysis of any resin contained within could probably reveal this. Measures 3.75”L x 2.5”W x 2”H, with excellent deep gray to black burnished surfaces.
