Product Description
Silvia Maestrelli is the owner and winemaker at Tenuta di Fessina. Her desire from the beginning was to create “a place of beauty, between earth and spirit”, more than a cellar in which people, skills, and energies converged, which in turn merged to enrich the estate’s intangible heritage. A pioneer among the producers on Etna, she arrived in 2006 and created one of the most successful and recognizable cellars in the Etna area.
Tenuta di Fessina is located between two ancient lava flows that isolate the vineyards, creating a unique microclimate. There are old vineyards varying in age between 70 and 110 years old, located on a ridge of shallow, black soil with an important presence of sand, small pumice, and fine clays. In this land, trace elements, iron, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and manganese abound. The vines are planted at a high density but produce few clusters. These factors give the wines their amazing richness, complexity of aroma, and elegant structure. The marked minerality bestowed by the volcanic soils is striking.
“The 2012 Etna Rosso Riserva Il Musmeci is a pure expression of Nerello Mascalese. Only 7,000 bottles and 100 magnums were produced. The wine is slightly closed at first, but it opens relatively quickly to showcase territory-driven tones of dried black fruit, resin, tar, cigar smoke, black olive and scorched earth. The wine shows a careful and graceful aging evolution. However, the mouthfeel is compact and fresh.” Wine Advocate, 92 Points
The Il Musmeci, named for the Musmeci family who originally owned Fessina, is made from Nerello Mascalese grapes from a single vineyard with sandy lava soil and vines more than 80 years old.
